I’ve had various social media accounts for over 11 years. The total number of postings on those accounts is ZERO. The reason? Who would be interested in what I have to say, for starters? Then, I had no interest in letting the world know what I had for breakfast. People would post much private information that I would never think of doing. I always figured if my close friends wanted to tell me something or I wanted to talk to them, I would see them in person or give them a call. Then, there was the time wasted browsing the happenings of other people and so on. Okay, that is the old dog bit. Relying on a first impression made many years ago and never giving it a second thought.
So what is the new trick? Start posting! Why? Over the years, I have occasionally read posts on social media. I began to realize I would look forward to specific individuals’ posts. So, I asked myself, why? Was it because of the thought-provoking content? Was it because I could see what they had for breakfast–NOT. I discovered you could get to know the person better as their personality shone through the text. I became invested in them and what they had to say. Their content took on an even greater relevance. Then, the thought hit. Could that be a good reason to post? Entertain to a certain degree but, more importantly, provoke thought. I wonder if this is also a great way to show others a side of you that is not necessarily seen in public discourse. After all, the purpose of writing is often to present the writer’s thoughts. We usually forget that a conversation is directed to finding common ground and mutual agreement as part of the discussion. This is why I have seen email and text as a poor way to discuss things. Often, thoughts are laid down that would be presented differently if they were said in person. There is also a professional aspect to posting. Giving insight into the profession of the writer.
As an insurance advisor, I know that the industry does change. Not only products but also the regulatory aspects and the nature of doing business in insurance. Anyone outside of the profession will not see this, and sometimes, this leaves citizens with an old idea of what insurance does that is irrelevant. As I did with social media, you may need to do the same with insurance. It is a focus of what I do to help people understand how insurance works, and I don’t mean just policy features but fundamental aspects of insurance. For example, the nature of risk and how insurance works to help you manage different types of risks. How does the insurance company look at you as a potential client? What are they looking for?
I believe a basic understanding of the nature of insurance would go a long way in giving clients confidence in their choices. I use a tool called ‘My Financial Journey,’ which helps clients understand the potential risks they may be facing and gives them a path to financial security. I provide a free service, with no obligation, to provide a 30+ page report describing the journey. If interested, visit my website, TalkWithTim, and book a meeting. Or message me on LinkdedIn, or @TimZiebart on X. You can also call at 604-882-5917 or email timothy.ziebart@agc.ia.ca. Depending on your needs, the process can be completed in a few minutes or longer.
There, my first post was done. More to come.
Your friend,
Tim
